Changes to Medigap plans meet resistance
Reporting for Kaiser Health News, Susan Jaffe writes: A provision of the 2010 federal health law seeking to increase Medicare beneficiaries' share of health care costs is meeting resistance from an unlikely group of 33 state insurance regulators, health insurers and consumer advocates charged with revising Medigap insurance policies that cover most out-of-pocket expenses.

Michigan's insurance commissioner today ordered Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to extend to Oct. 17 the time for several thousand seniors with Medigap insurance to verify their residency in the state or face a big rate hike.

Michigan's insurance commissioner ordered Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to extend the time several thousand seniors with Medigap insurance have to verify their residency or face a big rate hike. The extension to mid-October follows a mix-up in which the Blues notified 8,900 seniors in a July 1 letter that they needed to verify they live in Michigan for at least six months a year.
